City Journalism attending NUJ rally

November 11 2007

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) organised a multitude of events all over Europe last Monday to protest against the problems media companies are causing for journalists, and for journalism as a whole.

Stand Up For Journalism, organised to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the union, consisted of a range of events from pickets and pamphleteering to friendly get-togethers.
The main goal was to protest against cuts in staffing, wages and resources which, according NUJ, limit the ability for journalists to provide the public with information. While the main event took place on Monday, the main goal was to start a continuous protest against the media bosses, from both journalists and their audience.
While based in the UK and Ireland, NUJ supported events throughout Europe, noting 15 international events in its programme. Protests supporting the Union’s cause in Europe and the US have also been reported.

City Journalism Review attended the rally in London at the King’s Cross Holiday Inn on Monday evening. The event consisted of several speeches highlighting the problems NUJ is fighting followed by a social drink for London-based journalists.
Apart from the events, NUJ is urging journalists and members of the public to sign its petition and to email their MPs urging them to sign Early Day Motion 1994, urging the authorities to investigate the link between concentrations of ownership and declining standards.
