BBC plans to cut more than 3,000 jobs by 2010

November 01 2007

The BBC has planned to cut 3,780 posts over the next three years, according to BBC news online. This is part of a three-year plan to cut back on £2bn, which critics say will largely affect the news division.

Peter Horrocks, head of television news at the BBC, said that around “475 journalists are going.” The plan involves a complete reorganisation of the BBC, a new investment in new media and a tri-media operation, which Mr Horrocks said will “bring together TV, radio and the web.”

When questioned about the impact of the job cuts, Mr Horrocks said that it will have a significant impact on the BBC and that “it’s quite tough.” But he stressed that it will improve the quality and be an “investment in new technology.”

As for the widespread criticism that the BBC is only cutting on the production and not in the right areas, Mr Horrocks said: “It is more senior managerial jobs…and there will be lots of savings in the administrative side."
